Margaret MacMillan in `The week that changed the world' meticulously recounts Mao's meeting with Richard Nixon.
She starts off with the official trip by Nixon, his arrival and his meeting with Chou En-lai. Then MM describes the meeting between Mao and Nixon. This meeting struck me as a bit of an anti-climax because whereas Nixon was the quintessential foreign policy president used to dealing with foreign policy himself, he must have found this quite difficult with a Mao, who at that point was just a doddering old man.
MM then continues to go through all the details of the rest of Nixon's state visit. There are also flashbacks back in history recounting the political relationship - or better said the absence thereof - between the USA and Communist China as well as all the development and historical details which eventually culminated in Nixon's trip to China.
